One of the most striking BMWs to have ever graced the road, the 6 series is already a modern classic and fast becoming quite collectable. The M635csi [M6 in the U.S.] is the ultimate and rarest 6 series with just over 5,800 copies produced worldwide. This is our Cinnabar Rot [Red] on Lotus White leather 1988 M6 - M Blitz [German for M lighting]. We ordered this car new exactly as seen in the photos, including the wheels, the chrome outside mirrors, the fire extinguisher under the driver's seat and the two-tone leather inserts. It has just 31XXX fully-documented miles and is in [better than] showroom condition.
The U.S. M6 was imported between 1987 and 1988. Conflicting information places the total number of cars imported by BMW NA at around 1,757, although that might include Canadian cars as well. The MSRP was $58,725.00, but with a couple of extras that could drive the price to over $60,000.00. The 1988 models are the more-coveted ones because of their cleaner and sleeker bumpers, driver's side airbag and plastic dash [the 1987 models had a leather dash with an extremely limited life expectancy].
In its November 1988 issue, Motor Trend selected the [E24] BMW M6 as one of the top ten performance cars in the U.S. "money no object." Others in the group included the awesome [E32] BMW 750iL, the only sedan in the group, the Porsche Turbo, 928 S4 and 944 Turbo, Ferrari Testarosa and 328GTS, etc. The M6 outperformed many cars in the test including the Ferrari 328GTS. The fact that this car is virtually stock makes it that much more rare annd valuable.
M Blitz raced in the 1990 Silver State Classic in the open class. Equipped with a header from the European M635csi, a Dinan chip & sprocket and ZR rated tires [in addition to other safety equipment], it was clocked [by the organizers] at a top speed of 162 MPH. The average speed over the 92 mile course was 149.2 MPH, good enough to place in the top ten. It was also one of only a handful of cars in the open class that was driven there rather than towed. After the race we got in the car, turned the ignition key and drove it back home to Los Angeles.
The car sits on 17" chrome BBS RS wheels special ordered at the time of delivery, shod with Yokohama AVS Intermediate tires. The car has always been garaged [in a sealed plastic storage container], has never seen rain and has never been smoked-in.
In 1993, we drove to Napa Valley and the BMW CCA Oktoberfest. After a nice car wash and wax, and in spite of the nearly 1,000 mile drive and a leisure day of driving school at Sears Point, the car won the Super Clean class [exterior, interior, engine and trunk] in the Zymol Concours D'Elegance. The car has also won the Los Angeles CCA Chapter Concours D'Elegance.
M Blitz is not a daily driver and never has been. It is a weekend and "special occasion" driver.
