This is "Der Grosser BMW" and the King of the Road - our Black on Saddletan (leather) 1989 BMW 750iL. The unusual (and striking) color combination was a special order European delivery through McKenna BMW in Southern California for Renate. We picked up the car at the Freimann delivery center (Munich suburb) on the first day of deliveries for the 1989 model year - October 3, 1988. After our briefing and fueling (compliments of BMW), we set out to Garmish via Autobahn 95 for a day of shopping and sightseeing. The fact that Renate is a Munchener and fluent in German sure helped. The 125 to 135 mph drive was at once exhilarating, but quiet and uneventful. Our older son Mark (six years old at the time) played in the back seat with his transformers without a worry.
In its November 1990 issue, Car and Driver proclaimed the (E32) BMW 750iL "the best sedan in the World!" in a comparison test against the Mercedes 560 SEL, the Bentley Turbo R and the Lexus LS 400. In its November 1988 issue, Motor Trend selected the (E32) BMW 750iL as one of the top ten performance cars in the World - price no object. It was the only sedan in the company of the awesome (E24) BMW M6, Porsche Turbo, Ferrari Testarosa, etc. The fact that this car has been "enhanced" makes it that much more fun (see tables below for enhancements). The car is not a daily driver, our (e28) 1983 BMW 528e and (e36) 1998 BMW M3 serve that purpose. Currently (its early in the new millennium) it has just over 57K miles most of which have been logged on outings to San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Barbara, San Diego and the like.
